Types of Laser Vision Correction
What is LASIK?
LASIK eye surgery is a procedure that corrects certain vision problems, reducing or eliminating the need for eyeglasses or corrective lenses. LASIK stands for Laser In-Situ Keratomileusis (the technical term for the surgical procedure). LASIK eye surgery is the most common type of refractive surgery. Refractive surgery changes the shape of your cornea to correct your vision. The lifestyle benefits can be tremendous for active and social people. These benefits can enable people to more freely pursue their hobbies, sports activities or career options.
What is All Laser LASIK? A Short Summary
LASIK uses a computer controlled laser to reshape the cornea and correct refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmastism. It takes about 10 minutes per eye.
The first step in the CustomVue™ LASIK procedure is to determine the individual characteristics of your vision using Wavescan technology. The Wavescan system creates a 3D map of the unique imperfections of your eye, and this map is used to drive the laser that is used during your LASIK procedure. Wavescan technology and the other tests we complete before your surgery provide 25 times more precise measurements than standard methods used today for glasses and contact lenses.
After you complete the pre-operative preparation, anesthetic drops will be placed in your eyes. A lid speculum will be used to hold back your eyelids so you cannot blink. Next, Dr. Izzo will use an Intralase laser to create an extremely precise flap by producing tiny bubbles inside the cornea. A very fine layer of the outer corneal surface is lifted back. Now that the corneal flap has been created your vision can be corrected using an excimer laser.
The excimer laser utilizes a cool ultraviolet beam to precisely and gently reshape the cornea, thus changing the focusing power. Reshaping the cornea allows light to focus more precisely on the retina for improved vision. Lastly, the flap is returned to its original position and reseals itself.
Am I a Good Candidate For LASIK?
People who want to minimize their dependence on glasses or contact lenses make good candidates for LASIK. Lifestyle, hobbies, and amount of correction needed are all factors that may determine whether you are a good candidate. The ideal candidate for LASIK is over 18 years of age, not pregnant, and free of any eye disease. You should experience stable vision for at least one year before having LASIK.
