MACULAR DEGENERATION
Macular degeneration is a leading cause of visual impairment in older individuals. As the area of the central retina (macula) degenerates, loss of central vision occurs, interfering with functions such as reading or recognizing faces. Age, heredity, and smoking are major risk factors for the development of macular degeneration.
