Dry Eye

A normal healthy coating on the front surface of the eyes is necessary for optimal ocular comfort and visual performance. If production of adequate tears is disrupted, or if the quality of tears produced is disturbed, a Dry Eye Syndrome can occur.

Symptoms of Dry Eye

  • Burning
  • Stinging
  • Irritation
  • "Tired eyes", along with difficulty focusing

Causes of Dry Eye

Dry eyes can occur as part of the aging process, especially after menopause in women. However, it can also be worsened by certain medications, environmental conditions, inflammation within the body - such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, and by inflammation within the eyelids.

Diagnosing Dry Eye

A detailed eye exam can often detect if a Dry Eye Syndrome is present and determine the cause.

Treatment of Dry Eye

Depending on the cause, various treatment modalities can be prescribed including artificial tears, lid hygiene, a short course of steroid eye drops, prescription medications such as Restasis to increase tear production, and tiny plugs which can be painlessly inserted into the tear drainage system to slow down the loss of tears from the eyes.
